Position Summary:

A 3-year postdoctoral research position is available within the "Handling Diversity in pre-modern India and Europe in Comparison (13th-18th Centuries CE)" project at the Department of Economic and Social History, University of Vienna. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will receive a gross annual salary of roughly 60.000 Euro.

We invite applications from researchers who have recently completed doctoral studies and work on comparative history of pre-modern India and Europe. The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work at the Department of Economic and Social History, University of Vienna, and is expected to be resident in Vienna. He or she will be participating in the research group's regular discussions and workshops, as well as its international and interdisciplinary cooperation. He or she will also be invited to teach in the University of Vienna’s master programs, especially in the Global History and Global Studies program.

The Project:

The Postdoctoral Research Fellow will work on his or her own research project as part of the larger comparative project "Handling Diversity in Medieval Europe and India in Comparison (13th-18th Centuries CE)," funded by the Vienna Science and Technology Fund (WWTF). The project’s main goal is to compare patterns in conceiving and negotiating political, social and religious diversity in Medieval India and Europe. Requirements:

- A PhD degree in a historical discipline (e.g. history, cultural anthropology, art history etc.)
- Fluency in English is required; knowledge of Persian, Hindi-Urdu, Kannada, or another relevant language is desirable; willingness to learn German
- Interest in cross-cultural and global history in the pre-modern era
- Willingness to participate in the department’s and project group’s activities
